Understanding Illuminated Manuscripts: A Guide to Technical Terms,
Revised Edition (2018), features three items from WMU Libraries Special Collections and Rare Book Department as illustrations of terms defined in the work. The items included illustrate the terms chained book (Ms. 177), gloss (Ms. 141), and marginalia (Ms. 170). The WMU items in this edition are included with materials from important collections at the J. Paul Getty Museum, the British Library, and the Huntington Library. The revised edition was prepared by Dr. Elizabeth C. Teviotdale, Assistant Director of the Medieval Institute, and Nancy K. Turner, Conservator of Manuscripts in the Department of Paper Conservation at the J. Paul Getty Museum. The images in the book are a part of WMU’s digitized Medieval Document Collection which were photographed and processed by Cecelia Moore and student assistants in Research Services at WMU Libraries.
