Graphic Design Art Hop Show at Zhang Legacy Center

So now there is a physical show of the original printed designs for the October Art Hop here at Western Michigan University, Zhang Legacy Center - Archives and Regional History Collections Library.

The site continues to state: "The Archives makes both physical artifacts and digital representations available to design professionals, educators, students, business people, researchers, and others interested in the rich legacy of graphic design, paper manufacturing, and printing in West Michigan. You can be inspired, inspire others, understand how design has helped successful businesses achieve their goals, and appreciate the leaders who influenced the world of graphic design– from right here in West Michigan."

Friday, October 6, 2017, 5 - 8 p.m. is the opening showing 50 designs from the larger Archives. Most items will remain on exhibit through November 22. Location is 1650 Oakland Dr.

The Zhang Legacy Center houses the larger Graphic Design Archives of West Michigan. Part of the University Libraries system its mission is to preserve the WMU Archives and thousands of regional history collections from a 12 county area in southwest Michigan. The state of the art facility is one of the largest in the state. In addition to the manuscript collections, the unit has oral histories, census records, a research collection of books, magazines, and newspapers, and several large photographic collections.

Special Collections Cosponsors Pop-Up Book Artist


A Chicago-based paper engineer and pop-up book artist, Shawn Sheehy, is coming to WMU in early October for workshops, lecture and exhibit. The Libraries Special Collections and Rare Books Department is a cosponsor with the Frostic School of Art and the Kalamazoo Book Arts Center.

The free lecture is Thursday, October 5, 6 p.m. in 2008 of the Richmond Center. His show is part of Art Hop on Friday, October 6 at the downtown Kalamazoo Book Arts Center, 6 - 9 pm. and continues through the month. The workshops for creating pop-ups are on Saturday and Sunday, October 7 and 8 and require registration at kalbookarts.org and https://www.facebook.com/kalamazoobookartscenter .

'Bestiaries & Herbiaries: The Pop-Ups of Shawn Sheehy' is the title of the event series and is supported by a grant from the WMU Visiting Scholars and Artists Program.
